Your tasks
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student in the field of advanced microbiome analysis eager to make a meaningful impact on further developing the microbiome into a highly useful biomarker for clinical diagnostics. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in microbiome analysis using genomics technologies and integrate multi-OMICs data to monitor outcomes of patients suffering from auto immune disease. This interdisciplinary position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate closely with clinicians and biomedical researchers as well as with scientists from two diagnostic companies. The project is funded by the Innosuisse and will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Bern and two diagnostic companies. The working place will be at the FHNW new Campus Muttenz, just outside Basel, Switzerland.
- Further develop our advanced microbiome metagenomics pipeline
- Integrate multi-Omics data for a meaningful readout (metabolite measurements will be generated by our collaboration partners at FHNW), feature extraction, and statistical interpretation
- Contribute to validation of dysbiosis and metabolic profile shifts from the gut microbiome clinical analysis
- Generate better insights in the coupling of IBD and microbiome
Your profile
We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:
- MSc degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a closely related field
- Experience in bacterial genomics or microbiome analysis
- programming skills (e.g., in Python or R)
- familiarity with microbiology and genomics data analysis (e.g., metagenomics, WGS, RNA-seq)
- ideally wet lab experience in genomics or molecular biology
- a team-oriented mindset with strong communication skills
- proficient in English (spoken and written); German is an asset
