Lead Architect: Next-Generation Live-Cell AFM Nano-Imaging
The Laboratory of Molecular Medicine, led by Prof. Yohei Yamauchi, is developing the ViViD-AFM V2.0—a next-generation nano-imaging system. This project focuses on transitioning from academic prototypes to commercial-grade industrial systems while ensuring complete IP independence from legacy V1.0 patents. Please enter text here
Project background
The Laboratory of Molecular Medicine, led by Prof. Yohei Yamauchi, is embarking on a transformative phase of the ViViD-AFM (Virus-View Dual Confocal and Atomic Force Microscopy) project. As we transition from academic prototyping to commercial-grade systems, we are seeking a visionary Lead Architect to drive the design and development of the V2.0 system. This role is critical for establishing technical novelty, securing a new IP portfolio, and preparing for our upcoming spin-off transition.
Job description
As Lead Architect, you will hold high technical autonomy over the system's design and technical roadmap. You will lead the effort to translate complex research requirements into a scalable, novel architecture that avoids infringement of existing patents while maintaining high-speed performance for live-cell imaging.
Profile
- System Architecture & Roadmap: Define the technical vision and high-level design for ViViD-AFM V2.0, ensuring a scalable and robust system architecture.
- IP Strategy & Novelty Design: Drive the design process to ensure technical independence from previous versions, establishing a fresh patent portfolio for V2.0.
- Technical Coordination: Work in a tandem with the Lead Mechatronics Engineer to synchronize hardware development with system-wide architectural goals.
- Specialized Expertise: Deep knowledge of high-speed AFM hardware dedicated to soft cell surface imaging.
- Experience: Proven ability to navigate the transition from early-stage academic prototypes to industrial commercial-grade systems.
- IP Knowledge: Ability to analyze legacy systems and design innovative, IP-independent technical frameworks.
- Education: Degree in Physics or Engineering with a specialization in precision instrumentation.
We offer
This position offers a unique bridge between high-level academic research at ETH Zurich and the fast-paced environment of a high-tech startup. You will have the opportunity to lead the architectural development of a system that will redefine video-rate nano-imaging. We offer a highly collaborative environment and will support your transition into the spin-off phase. ETH Zurich also provides assistance with permit processes (e.g., B-Permit sponsorship) for international candidates.
