Material Scientist - R&D (Biomaterials)

Simulands develops Human Grade simulators for training, research, and education in the cardiovascular field. Our solutions enable physicians and professionals to practice with real devices supported by real imaging, replicating complex clinical conditions in a safe and controlled environment.

Our mission is to transform the way cardiology is taught and learned, making clinical practice safer for patients and more effective for physicians. By combining engineering, research, and clinical expertise, we develop training tools that prepare the cardiologists of the future with realistic and rigorous learning experiences.

We are looking for a Materials Scientist to research, develop, and validate the next generation of tissue-mimicking materials for our simulation platforms. You will own a material development program end-to-end, from concept and formulation to validated prototype, designing the experiments and protocols needed to prove that a material behaves the way a real procedure demands. You will work closely with our internal engineering team and with an external R&D partner.

Position Description:

Function Material Scientist

Job type Full-time

Location Zurich

Residency Only Swiss residency will be considered

Languages Fluent English (oral and written). German is an asset.

Education Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biomedical or Chemical Engineering or equivalent.

Key responsibilities

  • Research, formulate, and iterate on novel tissue-mimicking materials, including hydrogel-based and stimuli-responsive formulations.
  • Develop materials that produce a realistic, reproducible response to energy-based medical procedures, both in their physical structure and in their visual appearance.
  • Define, run, and document characterization, test, and validation protocols; establish acceptance criteria and quantify reproducibility against clinical reference data.
  • Collaborate with an external R&D team and with internal engineers (mechanical, embedded, product) to integrate materials into finished simulator products.
  • Document formulations, processes, and results to support reproducible manufacturing and quality.

Technical experience

  • Hands-on experience developing and characterizing polymers, gels, or soft materials, including designing experiments and test protocols from scratch.

Nice to have (strong plus)

  • Experience with hydrogels or tissue-mimicking / phantom materials.
  • Background in the cardiovascular or interventional medical-device field.
  • Familiarity with stimuli-responsive ("smart") materials.
  • Experience designing materials that interact with energy-based devices

Personal Profile

  • Autonomy. Capable of owning problems end-to-end, identifying the right questions, and progressing with minimal supervision.
  • Structured thinking. Methodical approach to problem-solving, with clear documentation and the ability to defend design choices in review.
  • Proactivity. Identifies risks early, proposes alternatives, and raises concerns when requirements are unclear or inconsistent.
  • Attention to detail. Rigorous on specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Collaboration. Works effectively within a small, cross-functional team alongside R&D, Manufacturing, Design, and Quality.

What we offer

  • A high-ownership R&D role with real impact on a novel medical product.
  • A small, multidisciplinary, fast-moving engineering team.
