Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) is an affiliate of the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation. The mission of SPF is sustainably improving the situation of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) through clinical and interdisciplinary research on a national and international level. Specific areas of its comprehensive research include human functioning, social integration, quality of life, health services provision as well as the operationalization of health.
We are presently looking for a PhD Candidate (100%) in Palliative Care from a socio-humanistic perspective.
The successful applicant will work in a multidisciplinary environment in a research project - funded by Swiss Cancer Research- , focused on identifying facilitators and barriers to the implementation of specialized palliative care in oncology and hemato-oncology in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. The PhD project aims:
first, to examine the health care professionals’ views and experiences of specialized palliative care, second, to examine the views of family members of deceased oncology and hemato-oncology patients who have or have not experienced specialized palliative care services and third, to establish the current levels of awareness, knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes towards specialized palliative care among the general public.
This PhD project is a collaboration between SPF, the Department of Health Sciences and Health Policy of the University of Lucerne, the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI), with the support of the Office of the Medico Cantonale of Ticino and of Palliative.ch. Enrollment as PhD candidate is foreseen at the Graduate School of Lucerne, University of Lucerne, Switzerland. The PhD curriculum will be tuned to the candidate's specific interests and requirements.

The position is planned for 3 years (with a possible extension of one year), starting from 1 November 2017.
Planning, conducting and analysing semi-structure interviews and focus groups
Writing of scientific papers (for the Cumulative PhD dissertation)
Regular participation in academic activities of SPF and Department of Health Sciences and Health Policy
Master’s degree in health-, social-, communication sciences, psychology, nursing or related fields
Good knowledge in qualitative methods
Basic knowledge in quantitative methods
Excellent proficiency in Italian and English
Independent working method as well as ability to work in a team
